Andrew Trexler

PhD Candidate | Duke University

News Media | Political Communication | Public Opinion | Political Behavior

Hello! I am a doctoral candidate at Duke University pursuing a joint degree in Public Policy and Political Science.

My research primarily concerns the relationships between news media, public opinion, and political behavior, with a focus on the United States. I study when and how the news media covers politics, how elite political communication and public opinion each shape that coverage, and the downstream effects on mass political knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. To do so, I draw on a wide range of tools, including experimental methods, survey methods, text analysis, and machine learning. My work engages with several scholarly disciplines, including political science, public policy, mass communication, and psychology.

Prior to beginning my doctoral studies, I earned a master's degree in public policy from Duke University and a bachelor's degree in government from Wesleyan University.
